Description
- The variety can be grown under protected cultivation throughout the country and, in the open field, in the warmer regions, such as the west, the south and the south-east of the country.
- The crop may be established either from seedlings or by direct sowing. Establishment from seedlings has proved to be the most effective method.
- Whatever the growing environment – greenhouse, polytunnel or open field – particular attention must be paid to the support system (trellising). Under protected cultivation the plants are trained in a tunnel form, while in the open field they are trained over a pergola.
- Yield per unit area is much higher under protected cultivation, at over 40 t/ha, while 25-28 t/ha can be obtained in the open field.
- The fruits of this species are universally recognised by the scientific community for their effectiveness in combating type 2 diabetes.
