Hamburg parsley
Origin and history:
It originates from the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for thousands of years for its culinary and medicinal properties. The Oltis variety entered the portfolio of the Vegetable Research and Development Station (V.R.D.S.) in Buzau, Romania, when maintenance breeding was taken over from another research and development body; it is valued for its remarkable productivity and its excellent adaptability to different soil types and to changing climatic conditions.
Botanical characteristics:
Hamburg parsley Oltis is a biennial, herbaceous plant with fine, deeply divided, dark green and extremely aromatic leaves. The plant grows vigorously, reaching a height of approximately 30-40 cm. Its taproot is well developed, with an average weight of 110 g, which gives it greater tolerance of more difficult environmental conditions.
Growing conditions:
Hamburg parsley Oltis prefers fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. It withstands low temperatures and can be grown both in spring (March-April) and in autumn (September-October). It can be grown in the open field, in gardens or even in large containers. It requires regular but not excessive watering in order to keep the leaves tender and aromatic. Root yields range between 15-20 t/ha.
Care and maintenance:
To develop to its best, Hamburg parsley Oltis benefits from the periodic application of compost or organic fertilisers. Cutting the mature leaves regularly is recommended in order to stimulate regrowth and to maintain a steady yield. Removing weeds from around the plant helps it to grow healthily.
Propagation:
Hamburg parsley Oltis is propagated from seed, which germinates in 15-20 days at temperatures of 18-22°C. The seed may be sown directly into the soil or in trays for seedling production. A spacing of 10-15 cm between plants is recommended for optimum development.
Uses
Hamburg parsley Oltis is extremely versatile in the kitchen, where it is used in soups, broths, salads, sauces and side dishes on account of its fresh, intense aroma. It is also recognised for its health benefits, having antioxidant and detoxifying properties and supporting digestion.
