Rubiniu Red Onion
Morphological characteristics:
An early variety of onion grown from seedlings (110 days). The bulb is shaped like a truncated cone. On the outside, the bulbs are covered with parchment-like skins of a red-violet colour. The inner scales are light purple and are covered by a purple membrane.
Technological requirements:
The crop may be established either by direct sowing or from seedlings. It prefers fertile, sandy-loam, well-drained soils with a slightly acid pH. It requires direct exposure to the sun in order to form well-developed bulbs.
Yield and quality characteristics:
The bulb is large, with an average weight of 280 g, and the yield potential is 60 – 70 t/ha. The flesh is juicy and aromatic, and less pungent.
It can be eaten fresh both in season and out of season, in winter, thanks to its moderate storage life.
