Description
Origin and history: Chabaud carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus var. chabaud) are known for their abundant, colourful flowers. The Chabaud Feuerkoning variety, also known as „King of Fire”, stands out for its bright red colour. This variety, registered in 1976 and maintained by the Vegetable Research and Development Station Buzau, has long been valued and grown for the beauty and chromatic intensity of its flowers.
Botanical characteristics: Chabaud Feuerkoning carnations are herbaceous annual plants reaching a height of 50-70 cm. The plant has a compact, well-branched habit, with linear, greyish-green leaves of a slightly waxy texture. The flowers are large, 6-8 cm in diameter and full, and are an intense, vibrant red.
Growing conditions: Chabaud Feuerkoning carnations prefer sunny positions, but they will also tolerate partial shade. The ideal soil should be well drained, sandy and rich in organic matter. They may be planted in the spring months (March to May) and flower abundantly until late autumn. Watering should be carried out regularly, particularly in the morning, avoiding excess water in order to prevent fungal diseases.
Care and maintenance: These flowers are relatively easy to look after. It is beneficial to feed them with a balanced fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Deadheading spent flowers helps to extend the flowering period and to keep the plants looking neat.
Propagation: Chabaud Feuerkoning carnations are propagated from seed, which is sown in early spring in greenhouses, or directly in the garden once the risk of frost has passed. Germination generally takes between 7 and 14 days at a temperature of approximately 20°C. Young plants should be thinned so that each plant can develop properly.
Uses: In addition to their decorative role in gardens, pots and window boxes, Chabaud Feuerkoning carnations are ideal for bouquets and floral arrangements thanks to their large, fragrant flowers. The sweet, intense scent of the flowers makes them perfect for adding charm and elegance to any space.
