- Implementation period: 2023- 2026
Project objectives
- The project aims to modernise horticultural crop technologies through the efficient use of natural and man-made resources, in order to reduce the impact of climate change and raise the level of environmental protection. In this context, the project pursues the conservation and sustainable use of genetic diversity by establishing and characterising germplasm collections — including landraces and crop wild relatives — for species such as onion, garlic, parsnip, cabbage, kohlrabi, radish and bean.
Results
- Completion of the desk study on progress in the breeding of onion, cabbage and garlic, based on current scientific sources;
- Updating and preliminary characterisation of the germplasm collection held at the Vegetable Research and Development Station Buzau, including local clones and families;
- Identification of valuable genetic sources (e.g. Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum, local forms of Allium cepa) with potential for selection and breeding;
- Establishing breeding directions aimed at reducing dependence on imported genetic material and increasing the resilience of local agroecosystems.
- Evaluation of 26 garlic clones, 13 onion families and 2 cabbage families under field conditions, using agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) analysis to delimit genetic variability. Selection of 10 garlic clones and 5 onion families with valuable agronomic characteristics for further research and for inclusion in the subsequent stages of selection. Identification of distinct clusters in garlic, showing both high potential under optimum conditions and increased tolerance of climatic stress. Delimitation of two main phenotypic groups among the onion families, with potential for obtaining genotypes resilient to climatic variability;
